Dura Coat fire ams finishing
Dura Coat fire ams finishing

I have been looking into refinishing some of my fire arms (Ones I received from my father) So the bluing is pretty much gone and there is some rust. So I was wondering if anyone has used Dura coat before? Also if there is any other product that you might know of out there that is great I would appreciate the info. I would prefer to spray it on rather than soak it. I have all of the spray equipment and shop for it.

I used Dura Coat last year on a couple different rifles. I was more than pleased with the way they turned out. I will tell you a couple tricks one is if its hot out when you spray your duracoat you can hang the fresh sprayed gun in your truck from the visors. The temp inside of a truck in the summertime will get to a 130 here. That way your basically baking the product and don't have to wait for the two week cure time. A few hours in a truck and your ready for your next coat or finally coat. I would recommend going with a clear matt over whatever color you choose. It evens everything out and makes it look great. I will try and post a pic of a Rem Sendero I did with a HS stock. Oh another trick is to overlap Blue painters tape over wax paper then cut your stencils out of it. You can hold them up to your gun and if you like it pull the wax paper off and apply it easy and cheap stencils.

I would like to see the pics. Thanks for your advise. Two more questions for you. Some of the fire arms have a little rust on them so would you recommend sand blasting them or sanding. Also do you know if Dura coat is compatible with a self etching primer? I know this primer is to be used on bare metal to help adhesion and stop rust from happening. ( My auto body experience is coming out)
Any more info you have would be greatly appreciated!!

I Sanded mine with 600 grit because I had a Chrome Molly Barrel. I think you would be fine with just sanding with 600 grit. I dont know about the primer. Duracoat is suposed to be excellent when it comes to rust and I havent had a problem even on the chrome molly barrel with it. The only think is let it cure or put it in a oven or truck to cure. It takes heat or time to cure it. Here is were I got all my supplys http://www.houtsenterprises.net I will try and post some pics of my last rifle.

That looks FANTASTIC!!! Thanks for all of your info and the pics. You have convinced me to try it out. Also thanks for the tip on the wax paper and the painters tape. I will give it a go. It might be a while since it is 30* on average right now although I might just heat my garage out back to try and help it cure.

It was actually really easy. I'm a farm boy from Oklahoma and if I can do it anyone can. My artistic skills are very limited. I would recommend buying a good Air Brush and using a compressor. The caned air is not that great. I tried it a couple times and ended up rigging up my compressor out in the shop. The decreaser they sell works excellent. I highly recomend the clear coat in matt or gloss what ever you like to blend it together. Mine didnt look that great until I used the matt clear coat on it then it came together nice. If I can do it anyone with any skill at all will have know problem.

Well Tom I have ordered my Dura coat and will be putting it on my 870 express to start. Cheap gun and a good place to start to get the hang of it before I do a more expensive riffle. I will post the finished pics of it when I am done. thanks again for all of your info on this product and also giving me the website to go to so I can order the product.

Your welcom bearhntr. I think you will find it is a really easy project. I would shure put a coat of clear or matt on it when you are done. It really brings the color together. Let me know how it turns out. Tom Jr.

I will let you know. I bought the clear in the matt and then the coyote brown and then another package deal and I think it came with clear as well. I want to make a "field" camo gun. This way I will be able to use it in the marshes and the fields with my layout blind. We will see how my camo pattern skills turn out. I did not buy their stickers I will make my own patterns.
