This hunt was my son's first real hunt. We did some walk around but nothing serious. We pulled into a spot off the road to park and I told my son we would wait a few minuets for the area to calm down then we would get out and start to hunt. I stepped out of my truck to put my jacket on and then got back in and turned to close the door. As I turned I looked out the windshield and saw the deer walking across in front of us at about 60 yds. It was still dark enough to not see points but I could tell he had a large rack. I said deer, deer, deer, to my son . I hoping he would see the deer. I grabbed my rifle and chambered a round and stepped out of the cab and put one foot on the nerf bar and put the rifle between the door and the door jam. I bleated once, he didn't stop. I bleated again this time he stooped. I took the shot. As I came off the recoil I asked my son if he had run or dropped. He said he thought he dropped. I told him to stay in the truck,( because he hadn't even gotten out yet) as I went to see if he had gone down. as I cleared the ridge behind me in the picture there he lay. when I saw the rack I just started shaking all over. I still shake when I relive the story.

actually it came from public land north of Amarillo. That's about as close as I want to go.

Good enough. lots of people do not realize the quality of mule deer and whitetails in the panhandle. Plus the enormous amount of feral hogs. What really blew me away was the live weight of the deer in panhandle. Coming from West Texas, the panhandle weights on a mature deer both whitetails and mule deer are sweet.
Good luck in the coming year.

This deer is not indicative of the quality of deer that commonly roam public land. This deer was taken at the hight of the rut. He had his nose down an was walking like he was on a mission. I believe he was roaming and had come from one of the several large ranches that border the public land. I just wish that all the deer on public land was as nice as he is, but I can only dream. As for weight I don't know what his live weight was, but his field dress weight was 150 lbs. Got about 60 lbs of meat. Good luck to you also. Be safe and God bless
